I've found the quickest way to get to know people is to ask them about their children or their pets. So to get to know you all a little better, I thought I'd start.

My cats Harley & Scooter were named because of our interest in motorcycling.

We have 3 dogs. Elvis was named after...welll you know who... :-)

With Buster (a stray) we tried several names but the first one he responded to was Buster - so it stuck.

Our dog Nosey, however, is the true story here. We were originally planning on adopting a bloodhound and planned to name it "Nosey" because of the bloodhound's scent abilities. To make a long story short, we ended up adopting a black lab mix instead whom we named Nosey.

Little did we know at the time how curious she would be and how aptly her name would fit her personality. I guess we should have had a clue when leaving Petsmart in a shopping cart, her brother Elvis lay down to take a nap but she put her little paws on the edge of the cart and checked out the world as it passed by.

So how did your pet get its name?

Well, our cat's name is not very creative and our dog's name followed in her brother's tradition. When we first got our cat as a kitten, we didn't name him right away. He was always getting into trouble and I found myself shouting "cat" to try to get him to stop what he was doing. As a result, we started calling him Cat. Thinking that was a little silly, we changed it to the more exotic Gato. And so out cat's name till today is still Gato.

Our dog's littermate was adopted first by my daughter and son-in-law and they called him Hoover, as a tongue-in-cheek reference to J Edgar Hoover. My son-in-law has been involved in politics and is a bit of an historian for political figures and thus the source of the name. When we adopted Hoover's sister, we thought we would keep with the political theme and thought about names, settling on Maggie, for Margaret Thatcher.

I am not sure I want to be analyzed on our dog naming but there you go!
I like the exotic Gato. If you ever figure out a way to get a cat to "mind", please let me know.

Our cat Harley is very "talkative" which sometimes is an unwelcomed trait especially at 5am on a Saturday morning. It seems she's trained us well. We now give treats or pick her up just to quiet her down.

I figured when you said Hoover - you'd next tell me he ate everything in sight :-)
Hello Bob & Sue,
What a great way to start up conversation. People love to talk about their animals.
Well, I have a 4 year old Black Pug and her name is Tallula Bell. The story is My younger sister when she
was very little watch the Dinsey Movie "Aritsacats" (SP?) and the 2 cats on their were Taluse and Tallula.
I always teased my wife that I wanted to name our kids that, So she said I could name our animals that.
Fun times!
True - I get started talking about my pets and you can't shut me up. :-)

I attended Kentuckiana Pug Rescue fundraiser back in April and it was a blast. I was truly impressed by the breed never having been around many Pugs before that. If you are interested, Kentuckiana Pug Rescue will also be having another get-together in August at the Boone County Fairgrounds in Lebanon, IN. If the event is similar to April's show, they have activities throughout the day and lots of vendors. For more information about the event, please visit their website at www.kentuckianapugs.com
We have lots of animals...

Dogs:
Ruby - came from the humane society with that name - she is red, though.
Otis - came from the human society with that name.

Cats:
Skinny - she used to be skinny. She is now fat.
Sneakers - as a kitten she was fascinated with shoes. Now she is fascinating with attacking our feet.
Chris - she showed up on Christmas Eve

Horses:
Alpine - previous owner named him - although I think the name came from the fact that he climbed out of a stall as a colt.
Jack - previous owner... just easy to remember, I guess.

Chickens:
Most aren't named... but a few are:
Preston: The big rooster - my wife says it's from a cartoon or something?
Big Bertha: She was huge as a chick, and still is... looks more like a hawk face than a chicken, also.
Crazy Eddie: Simply crazy.
Dinner: the three roosters's who have made their way to my kitchen table.
I've heard of other farmers naming their pigs/cows etc - I guess I'm too soft - I'd hate to name them and then find them on the dinner table :-)
Oh, I forgot one.

Pete the parakeet.

We used to have Sam the parakeet, also... but Pete murdered him, we think...

So now there's just Pete.
Maybe Pete would have preferred a Samantha rather than a Sam as a bird cage mate. :-)
We just got a kitten and his name is MINOU-"A French Canadian word for CAT" my husband is French Canadian so I agreed on the name. We have two birds OZZY is the male bird he sings alot so thats how he got his name and LUCY is the girl bird we named her after the song "LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS".
What a great post. I love to talk about my dog! He's an adorable Lhasa Apso who just turned three yesterday.

Two years before we even got him, we were driving around and saw a street named Buckles. My husband and I said to each other, "That would be a great name for a dog." Two years later when we got him, that was the only name that made sense to us. Of course, in my family, no one really gets called by their given name all that often. I call him many other things like Boo and Buckleboo!

Isn't it funny the nicknames we come up with for our pets.

Elvis at our house is = Big Boy and Old Yellar
Nosey is = Sissy, NoseBud and NoseyPosey
Buster is = Little Guy, BusterWuster and sometimes Tinkerbell (cause his tags jingle)

Harley is = LoudMouth
Scooter is = ScooterBud
Hey Sue,
We had a Boston Terrier who is no longer with us, and he was not the cutest dog- Lee named him Bugley for "butt ugly".... We miss our Bugley so much. Animals are SUCH a big part of the family and it was a depressing period when we lost Bugley as a family member. We have an electronic fence around the yard and he was excellent about staying in the yard. He was always sitting on the front porch rocking chair waiting on us to get home and he would "smile" when he saw us pull into the driveway.
Our other dog, Jack, is a toy poodle who thinks he is a much bigger dog! Naming him was not much of an art, he would not respond to any name that we called him, except for JACK. He goes with us everywhere we go and is such a great dog. We went to the dairy farm the other day and left Jack in the house so he could access his food/water. We closed all the doors and thought we had everything put up that would cause him any grief. Well, when we got home, we saw that he had gone under a cabinet and pulled the D-Con tray out and there were pellets of D-Con everywhere. I called Poison Control and took him into the doggie ER that night. He's doing well right now, but, he still has another 14 days and then bloodwork to see if all is well. I didn't even think about the
D-Con! I definitely will be more cautious in the future. I don't want to lose my baby and don't want to be guilty of not being a good pet owner.
