February is American Heart Month. Oatmeal is considered one of the best heart-healthy foods. But, it has a reputation for being really bland. Maybe once I tell you about the different types of oatmeal and give you a few suggestions you’ll change your mind.
Quick Oats. Instant oatmeal is fast, but it doesn’t have the best texture. Plus, if you’re buying flavored instant oats it’s most likely loaded with sugar and salt—kind of negates those healthy benefits of the oatmeal. Quick oats have a much better texture and take just a minute or two longer to make. I make quick oats for my husband, The Furry Guy, several times a week. I bring the water to boil with raisins and dried cranberries (or whatever dried fruit we have on hand). The fruit gets soft and flavors the water as it comes to a boil. Once the water is boiling, I add the oats. When he’s ready to eat it he adds just a bit of honey.
Rolled Oats. These are my favorite. They have a firmer texture. Once the water’s boiling it only takes five minutes to cook them. I like just a touch of butter and some Stevia in mine. I’m diabetic, so the honey isn’t an option.
Steel-Cut Oats. If you’ve never tried these, you should. They aren’t like any other oatmeal. They have a nutty flavor and a chunky texture. They take 25 minutes to cook, once you’ve added them to boiling water, but they’re worth every minute.
If time is the issue, you can make your favorite oats ahead of time and simply heat them up in the morning.
Of course, you can add the dried fruit to any type of oats. They add flavor and nutrition. Nuts are another good addition. Go easy on sweeteners and butter. After all, you’re doing this for your heart.
